Broken Bells – "The Ghost Inside" (2010)

2010/09/25

I am nervous about The Shins. I had a chance a few years ago to go see them, but at the time I thought I was too old to go to concerts. A side effect of just turning 30 perhaps? Then The Shins have had some band turmoil. Some changes in its members, and though they are working on a new album, it will likely be quite different. Yet here I thought they were improving album after album.

Then Broken Bells came out, and I have avoided it for a while. Broken Bells is a composed of James Mercer (The Shins' lead singer and founder) and Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton). It has been successful and yet in my mind, such solo projects tend to lead to more, and thus we have likely seen the best of The Shins. I also kick myself for not taking some of the musical opportunities I had, for they have likely passed forever and will never be the same. Change is inevitable though, and you have to accept that. It is just a reminder to seize the day! Carpe diem!

PS: This video featuring Christina Hendricks of "Firefly" and "Mad Men" fame, is pretty sweet. It happened to come up in discussion while hanging out last night and reminds me of John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" a bit.

The Shins – "New Slang" (2001)

2009/11/26

"You gotta hear this one song — it'll change your life; I swear." – Garden State

Seriously.

While most of you were probably still resisting waking up or working on the turkey, on this Thanksgiving Day, I was out doing my yearly 7 mile run. I usually run about 3.5 miles, but on Thanksgiving, for some insane reason, I like to double it. It takes me just over an hour and I usually get to the point where I feel like I could just run forever, but I know I shouldn't. Plus it can get a bit boring after an hour and I'd rather do something else. Marathon runners are just plain crazy in my book.

Just after I stopped running and proceeded to walk (because after 7 miles of running your legs will refuse to stop moving for a while), this song came on on my iPod and it gave me chills. I had the sensation of being content and accepting of the way things are. The mellow tone and words truly sank in. Things are not "perfect". I will never achieve all my hopes and dreams. But that is ok. I did successfully complete 7 miles of running. What more do I need at this moment?

PS: See "Garden State" if you haven't already. It one of my favorite movies for sure. It'll change your life too!

Album of the Week: The Shins – "Wincing The Night Away" (2007)

2009/06/21

Track 4: Phantom Limb:

I already posted Australia, but now I am posting the whole album it is from by The Shins! "Phantom Limb" is a close runner up though.

The Shins are a refreshing sort of band because they really are very unlike anything else. They have a unique sound. The closest in my mind is "Death Cab For Cutie", I suppose. They totally go my speed and have my demeanor though. I am not out of place or time when I listen this album, and there is a dreamy quality to many of the songs on the album too. When this first came out I listened to it over and over.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "Australia" being my favorite.

The Shins – "Australia" (2007)

2009/04/24

This song always lights up my day. Today being Friday I may not need it, but I had The Shins on my mind. This song seemed just right. I love the opening lines "born to multiply, born to gaze into night skies, all you want's one more Saturday", that touch of the banjo, and feeling a bit more able to meet the day by the end of the song. Try it out!
